Wk 1

Introduction & Challenges in Education

Discussion-based session about students’ own learning experiences where they are asked to highlight the major challenges they think are in education.

 

 

Wk 2

How do people learn? Skinner’s Answer

Introduce students to the behavioral views of learning and its relation to society’s expectations. Students will be encouraged to reflect on their own learning process in relation to this theory.

 

 

Wk 3

How do people learn? Piaget and Vygotsky’s answers

Students will be introduced to the constructivist and social views of learning.

 

 

Wk 4

Curriculum Design

Different approaches to curriculum design will be presented.

 

 

Wk 5

Why do people learn?

A brief introduction on educational theory, including early philosophers and educational psychologists will be presented to students, allowing for discussion to contextualize the theory.

 

 

Wk 6

Why do people learn in Egypt?

The theoretical foundation will be related to the government’s approach to education. Students will be exposed to the ministry’s latest strategies in an attempt to relate the theory with the context of education in Egypt.

 

 

Wk 7

The Banking Model of Education

A discussion about Freire’s banking education model will be generated.

 

 

Wk 8

How are curricula constructed in Egypt?

Students will understand how curricula are designed in Egypt while relating that to modern curriculum design theories.

 

 

Wk 9

Where does Egypt stand in the midst of all the theory?

Students will be given the chance to connect the education philosophies with learning theories while relating both to the Egyptian context.

 

 

Wk 10

Standardized Assessment and Int’l Benchmarking Tests: PISA and TIMMS

Introduce students to standardized assessments while exploring where Egypt stands.

 

 

Wk 11

History of Education Reform and Current Structure of MoE

Students will be divided into groups to discuss and analyze the different education reform projects that were implemented in Egypt by International Donors and Civil Society Organizations.

 

 

Wk 12

How can we improve?

A session for students to brainstorm ideas for group projects.

 

 

Wk 13

The role of NGOs and the private sector

Guest speakers from one NGO and one private sector company that works in Education (INTEL, Microsoft…etc.)

 

 

Wk 14

Project Presentations

Students will present their final projects in this class.
